History of Kisii University

Kisii University was founded in 1965, as a Primary Teachers’ Training College on a 61-acre land that was donated by the County Council of Gusii. Insider sources indicate that President Moi played a key role in the establishment of the institution.

The college was later upgraded to a Secondary Teachers’ College, admitting its first diploma learners in 1983.

In 1994, the college was taken up by Egerton University as one of its satellite campuses.

The milestone marked the beginning of a new era, with the university expanding its academic programs to match the increasing demand for higher education.

In 2013, former President Mwai Kibaki granted Kisii University a charter to become a fully-fledged public university.
