Located along the Mogonga–Igare road in Nyamache Sub-County, Kisii, Nyabisase Senior School has spent decades quietly rising to the status of a regional academic giant. Under the stewardship of outgoing principal David Ogega, popularly known as “Ogeturengi,” the institution’s population grew from 120 learners to well over 3,000.
In the first week of July 2026, that reputation collided with controversy, as the school became a center of one of Kisii County’s most talked-about education stories.
Nyabisase Senior School performance and unrest
Formerly called Nyabisase Mixed Secondary School, the institution is now a senior school hosting Grades 10, 11, and 12 learners under the new CBC framework, with the first cohort of Grade 10 students admitted in 2026.
The school reportedly offers all three main CBC pathways, STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts & Sports operating as a boarding institution classified C2 within the Kisii County.

Nyabisase’s KCSE results tell a story of steady academic recovery and improvement.
Back in 2020, the school posted a mean score of 5.860, with a pass rate of roughly 31 percent and only 182 of 578 candidates qualifying for direct university entry.
That was already an improvement on some earlier years, when mean scores dipped closer to the 6.0 mark.
Fast forward to the 2025 KCSE results, and the mean score was 6.89. Out of 1,011 candidates, 602 managed to secure direct university entry grades, a pass rate approaching 60 percent.
Besides academics, the school also maintains an active co-curricular program, with drama, soccer, athletics, and volleyball.
The End of an Era: David Ogega’s retirement
On June 30, 2026, the school held a ceremony honoring Chief Principal David Ogega for 40 years of service as a TSC certified teacher and administrator, much of it spent building Nyabisase into the institution it is today.
On this day, the man closely associated with the school’s excellence was stepping away just days before end-of-term examinations were due to begin.
The celebratory mood did not last. Within days of Ogega’s exit, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced his replacement: the senior principal of nearby Mochorwa Secondary School.
Rather than a smooth handover, the announcement triggered fierce resistance from students, who rejected the posting. The situation escalated quickly, students clashed with teachers in running battles, hurling stones at one another as police were deployed to restore calm.
The unrest culminated in the torching of one of the school’s dormitories, after which students fled the compound, leaving shocked local residents to watch the chaos play out.
Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir visited the school alongside senior security officials to assess the damage and investigate the root causes of the disturbance. Eventually, the school was closed undefinedly pending further investigation.
The Nyabisase case is not an isolated incident. It follows a string of similar unrest cases at Kenyan secondary schools in recent months, including a serious fire at Utumishi Girls Academy that claimed the lives of 16 students.
The Ministry of Education officials have since been under pressure to address what has become a recurring pattern of school closures tied to leadership changes and student grievances.

In conclusion, Nyabisase High School remains on the spot even as the institution welcomes a new administration in the hope of sustaining or even better building in Mr. Ogega’s legacy.
